This is our latest safari itinerary inclusion packed with extra activities on top of our game drives. Twelve exciting days out in the wild but concentrating on the eastern parks in Kenya – Amboseli, Tsavo West, Taita Hills, Tsavo East, Lumo Conservancy and back to Amboseli.

Add in night game drives, visit Shatani Lava Flow and Mzima Springs, underground photography hides, sundowners, bush dinner, bush breakfast, cultural village visit,overnight in a photography hide fully kitted out with beds and dedicated outdoor lighting on the waterhole. What an experience!

Day 1

NAIROBI TO AMBOSELI

(distance 240 km)

We make our way out of the city and towards the acclaimed Amboseli NP, home of elephant herds and at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro -Africas’ highest mountain and the highest free standing mountain in the world. We relax after lunch before our afternoon game drive where we will go in search of big cats, elephants, zebras……….

AMBOSELI TO TSAVO WEST

(distance 120 km )

Once we enter the gate into Tsavo West NP, we begin our game drive towards our hotel. We will pass through the Shatani Lava Flow .The black lava is spread over 50 km. The name “Shetani,” which means “devil” in Swahili, is derived from the local belief that when the lava flow first occurred, around 500 years ago, it was the work of evil spirits due to the violent and fiery eruption.
We’ll also visit the Mzima Springs which produce an incredible 250 million litres of fresh water daily. We’ll do a guided walk which includes going into an underwater viewing chamber. After lunch at our lodge, and rest time, we will head off on our afternoon game drive.

TSAVO WEST TO TAITA HILLS

(distance 90 km )

The private Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is our next destination. Our accommodation is famed for being one of the worlds’ most photographed lodges. The sanctuary is home to more than 50 different species of animals and over 300 different species of birds. There is also a tunnel that leads to an “all day” underground photo hide where all manner of animals come to drink at the well- positioned waterhole outside it. Today we will do both an afternoon and night game drive. Night drives provide an opportunity of seeing animals not encountered during the day eg/ striped hyena, mongoose, civet, genet, porcupine and bushbaby. And maybe get lucky to see predators hunting.

Day 4

FULL DAY TAITA HILLS

Todays activities include both a morning and afternoon game drive. This will provide an ideal opportunity to see the abundant wildlife that resides here. In the latter part of our afternoon drive we will head to one of the four bush activity venues within the sanctuary for sundowners (drinks as the sun sets) overlooking the magnificent views of the Taita Hills. This is followed by the awesome experience of dinner out in the bush. After dinner we can do a night drive back to our lodge.

TAITA HILLS TO TSAVO EAST

(distance 90 km )

We leave after breakfast and head to our next location - Tsavo East NP, famous for its large herds of red- dusted elephants. This is the largest, and oldest, National Park in Kenya covering almost 14,000 sq km. It’s also the home of the longest plateau in the world - Yatta Plateau. There is abundant wildlife and birds in this park. The critically endangered Hirola Antelope resides here but it’s not easy to find them.

FULL DAY TSAVO EAST

After breakfast we’ll head off, with picnic lunch, for a full day game drive. Depending on time and what we see, morning tea will be on top of Mudanda Rock. Mudanda rock dates back to the Precambrian era, it is said to have been used for drying strips of meat and as a lookout in the past by the local tribes. Today it serves as one of the view spots with the top giving 360deg views of the park.

TSAVO EAST TO LUMO CONSERVANCY

(distance 100 km )

We’ll arrive at our next destination in plenty of time for lunch, rest, then an afternoon game drive to explore this region. This conservancy is very community minded and has made tangible improvements to the lives of the local people with investments in infrastructure, education and healthcare. It’s also an inspiring example of how people and wildlife can co-exist. Afternoon game drive and night game drive for those that
want. ( night game drive to be organised and paid for at the lodge)

Day 8

FULL DAY LUMO

We’ll leave the lodge at 6.30am for a morning game drive as the sun rises. This is a beautiful, peaceful time of the day when the air is cool and the predators are still active.
This will culminate with a bush breakfast somewhere out in the wild. Our chef will prepare a cooked breakfast while we relax and soak up the atmosphere of the bush.
This will be followed by a cultural visit to a local village. We will enter a typical ethnic home to see how they live. Other activities may include milking a cow, harvesting vegetables, traditional cooking practices, making sisal ropes, basket weaving, dancing/drumming, learning about medicinal plants. We may be driven to explore skull caves and untouched rainforest where it is possible to see rare birds and butterflies that only exist here. This will be a tailored visit to suit the group size, ensuring a personalized and engaging experience.
Lunch will be back at the lodge followed by rest time. 15 minutes from the lodge is a dedicated underground, photographic hide. It is airconditioned, wifi, mini bar and tea/coffee facilities, 4 bunk beds, toilet, adjustable exterior lights and one way glass so the animals are unaware we’re there. For those that want, and dependant on numbers, we have an overnight stay at the hide.

FULL DAY LUMO

Today we concentrate on the animals and birds with both a morning and afternoon game drive. We’ll do a PM at the photographic hide from sunset. This is the best time to get low and close to the animals as they come in to drink after a hot day.

LUMO TO AMBOSELI

(distance 180 km )

After breakfast we leave Lumo Conservancy and head back to Amboseli in time for our lunch at the lodge. Our accommodation is just outside the park gates. Afternoon game drive.

FULL DAY AMBOSELI

After breakfast, and with our picnic lunch, we enter the park for a full day exploring the swamps and observing the habits of the elephants, buffaloes, zebras and even lions and cheetahs if we’re lucky. We’ll head to Observation Hill to get a birds eye view of the landscape around us and Mt Kilimanjaro in all her glory. There’s an abundance of bird life in the wet areas with massive numbers of flamingoes.

AMBOSELI TO NAIROBI

(distance 240 km )

We’re back on the road again after breakfast heading to the city life of Nairobi. Arrive for lunch (own cost). Our overnight stay is amongst the beautiful, manicured gardens of our hotel which is set on 50 acres. Relax, swim, wander the gardens. It doesn’t end there though because tonight we enjoy a meal of a vast array of bbq meats, sizzling hot and presented on skewers and carved at our table within the atmosphere of the Nyama Choma Ranch. Live music emanates while we dine. This restaurant has its own stage, state -of-the-art lighting and sound system which will be the backdrop for a 45 minute extravaganza show of dance,brilliant costumes and acrobatics by world renown Safari Catz- a team of professionally trained and choreographed dancers.
This ends our time together on safari.
