NEW !!
Six awesome days of adventure concentrating on seeing the rare black leopard!
We are offering you the chance of a lifetime ! Being in the presence of one of the rarest creatures on Earth – the melanistic (black) leopard is something you will always remember. The setting is in one of the remotest regions in Kenya so the numbers of humans around on any given day is very restricted. As are vehicle numbers. The only drivers permitted to do game drives here are the drivers employed by the camp. And there are strict rules around time spent with the cat to ensure she is not in any way stressed. So, this is a completely different experience but one not to be missed !!
Time spent within the camp area has a family feel to it where all guests sit around one big table to eat delicious food . Pre dinner the fire pit is where we can meet people from other parts of the world and share the days’ events. It’s a small camp dedicated to togetherness. Just an awesome place to stay !!
Laikipia Wilderness Camp
Laikipia Wilderness Camp is all about adventure. It stands in one of the remotest regions of Kenya. It has become famous for sightings of the melastic (black) leopard which has her territory right around the camp. These cats are extremely rare and you will be very privileged to see one. The most famous of all, Giza, was born and raised less than 1km from camp and is especially relaxed around the vehicles. She is a wild animal and can be unpredictable so there is, as with all wild animals, no guarantee of seeing her. Although, with a six day safari, the chances are favourable. There are at least three other black leopards seen in this conservancy.
The number of vehicles (3) and the time spent with Giza is limited.
We will, therefore, have a private Black Leopard Vehicle which will give us priority. The leopard is respected at all sightings and game drives seeing her can be ceased if it is seen she is under any stress or needs to hunt. Game drives to see her are restricted between 6am and 8 pm so that during night hours she is left to be a leopard.
The daily schedule
The daily schedule is flexible but an early start is encouraged. Tea/coffee will be served at the main tent at approx 5.30- 6am along with a light breakfast. We head out as the sun rises. Morning coffee and a muffin are served somewhere out in the bush mid morning before returning to camp around 11am for a scrummy lunch.
Sometimes lunch may be served out in the wild. The afternoon is the hottest time of the day - even for the animals, who will hide in the shade- so we will stay in camp to rest until 4pm before enjoying a freshly baked cake with tea/coffee before heading off again for the afternoon/night game drive. Night game drives can also unearth other unusual species such as striped hyena, aardwolf, aardvark, zorilla, porcupine, genet and other small mammals.
Sundowners are served in the vehicle as we wait for Giza to appear. We round off our day at 8 pm, back at camp, with drinks and chat around the fire pit before a delicious dinner is served at the communal table. It’s a real family atmosphere. Or sometimes we will stay out and enjoy a bush dinner around a fire pit in the wilderness. Lastly, it’s time for bed while listening to the sounds of the night time wildlife.
Game drives
Game drives are the best way to cover ground and see the most wildlife. This area has excellent populations of elephant, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, common zebra, warthog, buffalo, hippo and many antelope species. Lions,
leopards and wild dogs are also often seen.
We have 10 game drives within these six days at Laikipia Wilderness Camp before we head back to Nairobi and to your post safari accommodation.
Departure
We will transfer you from Holiday Inn Hotel to the airport for your onward flight. If your flight is at night there are options available within the city limits to do extra activities (at own cost) before heading to the airport.
